Karen has devoted most of her life to her art, working first with pencil and paper, then watercolor, and finally clay.
She attended the University of Iowa, in Iowa City, Iowa where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Art and Masters in Art Education. With a lengthy teaching career in the arts at the elementary, middle and high school levels in Iowa and in Missouri, she continued her work as an artist. Her artwork has been exhibited and sold at art shows and in galleries in the midwest.
She has been potting and sculpting clay for the last thirty years. She is equally
challenged and gratified by the hand building process involved in the creation of sculpture. During the last twenty years she has been sculpting animals, and of late, ponies and horses of all shapes, sizes and personalities. They have been created because she has a fondness, admiration and fascination for these great animals. Each animal enjoys an elevated status, and reveals a multiplicity of traits, rooted in historical tradition, realistic interpretation, and imagination. She enjoys using a wide variety of firing techniques, including Pit, Horsehair, Barrel reduction, Raku and Oxidation.
Over the years, she has maintained gardens in every place where she has lived since childhood. Today her gardens have developed over the last many years at her home and studio on Cattail Pond in Hart, Michigan. The gardens contain native flowers and shrubs in addition to a smattering of colorful flowering trees that offer solace and inspiration. Since she is a ceramic sculptor, she now creates a wide variety of garden art which further enhances the beauty and aesthetics of gardens. The artwork which manifests itself in a variety of forms, generates a pleasant addition to any garden. Fairy cottages, spirit houses, 17th c. cottages from around the world and raku fired colorful ceramic garden stacks are featured throughout her gardens.
During the winter time, abstract floral Raku fired wall plaques have been created which are representative of the flora and fauna in and around the countryside.
Karen works in her log studio and on occasion teaches Raku ceramic classes.
