Raku pottery is made using a grog based  clay. Your artwork is bisque fired upon completion and then glazed using special Raku glazes.  It is then fired outdoors in a  Raku kiln to 1,750 degrees F.  The artwork is removed at this temperature and placed in a metal trash can filled with a combustible material.  The lid is placed on the top of the can to seal out the oxygen. This is referred to the reduction phase of the process.  After 15 minutes, the pot is pulled from the can and allowed to cool on the sand. The pot is cleaned, removing the soot and exposing the brilliant colors. Raku pottery is not food safe and will not hold water, therefore it is for decorative purposes only.
